About me

My name is Dr Sally Fryar. I am a senior research fellow at Flinders University. My goal is to document and describe the freshwater and marine fungi of Australia.

I have studied a variety of fungi. During my PhD I studied the complex interactions between wood decay basidiomycetes. I first encountered marine and freshwater fungi in Borneo while I was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Hong Kong. It was during this time, while trying to conduct ecological experiments that I realised that we still have an enormous amount of work to do on the taxonomy of most fungi. I now describe new taxa and determine the distribution and abundance of microfungi around Australia, mostly marine and freshwater fungi.

I am also involved with various conservation efforts, including the IUCN SSC Aquatic Fungi Specialist Group and the IUCN SSC Fungal Conservation Committee.
